The Pines Golf Club currently has just under 300 members and celebrated its 47th Anniversary in July 2015.
The course is located approx.15 kilometers east of Whangarei city on the Whangarei Heads road. To get to the course, follow the airport signs from the Whangarei town basin and turn left after the Onerahi shopping centre into Whangarei Heads road. The road then follows the harbour for several kilometers and the course is on your right as you descend the hill from the settlement of Tamaterau and is about two- thirds of the way between Onerahi and Parua Bay. Visitors to The Pines often describe it as a picturesque course with stunning views of the harbour and of Whangarei Heads from many tee, fairway and hole locations as well as from the Clubhouse.
It is an eighteen hole course with a par of 71 and a 'slope rating' of 116 (medium degree of difficulty). It is not a long course, measuring 5368 metres off the men's blue tees. It does however present players of all abilities with many interesting hole locations and challenges with its meandering stream, tidal ponds, seaside mangroves and tree-studded fairways.
