A warm welcome in more ways than one and I mean warm because it has been quite a cold wintery last few weeks, as we have been battling the elements for quite some time. I was almost tempted to join those who went to Australia earlier this month, but succumbed to our conditions instead. We welcome new members to the club, old members returning and Guy who returned after his trip overseas.
Pennants Update
Attention all Pennant Convenors
Congratulations to the Northland Golf Club Number 2 team who today scored a 6-3 win over Mangawhai in the final of the Men’s Handicap Pennant competition at Bay of Islands Golf Club, Kerikeri.
They took a 2-1 lead from the morning foursomes. The singles were closely fought with Northland retaining a slight edge throughout, and they secured the pennant with a win in the second to last match.
Rumour has it that their last win was in 1985. They are eagerly anticipating defending their position next year.In the near future I will be sending a comments sheet out re format and timing of pennants. Please return the sheet with your comments, whatever your views, so any decision can be based on majority support.
A big thank-you to all the players who have competed, the Clubs who have hosted, referees, supporters etc who have all added to the enjoyment of the event.
Good Golfing

Mens’ Club Captains’ Report July, 2011
A warm welcome to all members who have joined the Pines Golf Club recently. Although conditions are not conducive to playing golf, we hope that you enjoy what the Club has to offer in terms of our general hospitality.
Hello to members as we are obviously trying to work out how to play winter golf, how to avoid the high shot and trying to play smart golf. It is always interesting to hear on a Sunday afternoon the strategic theories that some average players have about how to play this game in the winter. Which is what this game can bring, time together to explain its complex difficulty or the tales we share within the foursome…..priceless!
On 4th September we visit Hikurangi to play our annual interclub match for the Bull-Whimp shield. This has been an annual event since 1960 when the Presidents of Whakapara and Onerahi Golf Clubs donated the shield hence the name. Whakapara shifted to Hikurangi and Onerahi became The Pines but the annual fixture still continues after fifty years. One Pines member remembers playing for Whakapara at Onerahi. There have been plenty of great contests over the years especially at the 19th at Hikurangi when they had floodlights on the 18th green run by a noisy generator. The hospitality at Hiku is top class so please keep Sept. 4th for a great day of golf. The Pines are the current holders and the shield hangs on the corner of the bar where Hiku members are reminded that they do not have it.
Fixtures scheduled for the 4th have been carried forward to September 11th.

Club Captains Report – April 2011
Welcome one and all as we are now approaching the colder months of the year, putting on our leggies, our warm vests and what other attire that helps you during this time of year that would help improve your golf. Pines Pairs done and dusted, now we’re into the nitty gritty club competitions that each of us members would love to win, as each is closely contested as it is every year. The Bull trophy has started; a month into it and the first round of the Top Dog Competition has started and already we are starting to see the usual suspects emerging through to the next stages. I have had nothing but positive feedback from members saying how much they are enjoying not only their golf but the atmosphere the club has produced over the last few years and a credit for that must go to the Golf committee and their work, however having said that I do get the odd complaint as you do and you try and do the best you can to resolve, so thanks to all for your support.
Pennants Update
- Championship Pennants at the Pines 26 March was cancelled

Club Captain's Report
A happy new year to everyone, I hope everyone has had a well earned rest and energized again as we move into 2011 with much anticipation as we wait for the upcoming events for this year.
- notably our signature tournament the Pines Pairs as it is my first challenge but with obvious assistance from previous club captains, I’m sure I’d be just fine. Entries have been sent via email and post, communications with Micky Mac, Jeff Scott and Marty Duff have been initiated and word from one of Northlands top golfers Jack Winwood saying he has emailed top golfers only as well.
Apologies from Kevin Billington who is attending the NZ Seniors trial in New Plymouth the same weekend however he has mentioned that his son is playing in our tournament and to look out for him.
- The Pennants teams representing the club later this year in the Championship and Handicap divisions; entry form has been sent to Neil Sorenson via email and thank you to Barrie Short who again is in charge of the pennants teams
- Our club champs later in October
