Hi Everyone
The year is now half gone. Our financial year is done. The AGM is less than 2 months away. Treasurer Leonie C is flat out preparing the figures for the accountant.

As I write this report the rain begins again. The weather has been less than favorable not only for golf but also for the Club’s income. Ongoing wet weather equals no carts, no green fees, not much golf and very little banking. On one hand the course is as wet as I have ever seen it. On the other hand the greens are remarkably good. Regrettably our record income of last year won’t be repeated this time.

Our ongoing programme to bring the Club’s hardware up to scratch continues. Refrigeration system, Cart fleet, Tractor, Rough mower – all not new but very tidy – should not require major expenditure for many years. Gator – new. Greens mower –new. Fairway mower – next replacement and a major expense. Surrounds mower- will need consideration in 3 years, not critical.

We have managed to keep the Clubhouse open on all but the wettest days over the autumn and winter. Colin C has done an admirable job during Guy’s absence. Thanks to Les S, John P, Susannah S, Brian T, and Eve B for their assistance. And a very, very big thank you to Jan W (and Keith) for their work done on our behalf every Sunday.
Guy and wife Sue return from their OE on August 1st.

The cart storage proposal (written about in the last Pitchmark) has received only luke -warm support and is now on hold. Possibly the next Committee will inject new enthusiasm into this project.

The Paraplegic toilet has now been completed at WDC insistence. Thank you to Major Sponsor Pacific Homes (Tony and Mark Workman) for their support.  Some members believe this to be a bureaucratic waste of time and money; after all we have no paraplegic members. However it’s done. My opinion is best left unprinted.

This will be my final Pitchmark report as President of The Pines. I will stand down at next month’s AGM after four terms. Some years ago the constitution was altered so as to limit the time any member could hang on to office. Good move.

My view with the AGM fast approaching: The rotation of those who control the direction of any Club is essential for the health of that Club. All Committee members do their best but eventually become jaded and stale. The Club has more than 200 members who are eligible to stand for office, yet there is seldom a vote at our AGM. Traditionally, Pines members have been somewhat lethargic in coming forward. This must change. So, if you have never served on a Pines Committee now would be a good time. Many of our existing Committee will not seek re-election.  Forget the old chestnuts “but I don’t have time.” “but I’m not a Committee person”. Time to do your bit.
Regards
Mike G

How long will the big wet last?
We all know how wet the course is at the moment, which makes it not very enjoyable to play (or work) at present.  But we thank you all for your co-operation through this difficult period.
Just to give you some idea why it's so wet at present, here are some annual  rainfall figures recorded at the Club for the past 3 years.
2008    12 months     1941 mils          6 months    to end of June   1108
2009         "                1430                         "                                          924
2010         "                1505                         "                                          648
2011                                                             "                                      1452
Surely there must be some fine weather just around the corner!
Hopefully you have noticed the improvement in the playing surface of our greens, due to the purchase of a new Greens Mower. Thanks to the Committee for making it happen.
Pitchmarks on Greens -  It is most important to repair your pitchmarks.  Not just for the putting surface, but it also lessens the chance of disease, as the damaged area is more susceptible to fungal disease.  If repaired straight away the pitchmark will recover in 2 to 3 days, if not it can take up to 2 to 3 months.
Divots on Greens’ Surrounds -  Nice to see players are dropping their ball away from the green, when they land on the wrong green, before playing their next shot.  But if you remove a divot, could you please replace it as it is not easy playing out of deep divots.  It also prevents weeds growing in these bare areas.
When playing the lie under the rules of golf there is no relief given from a divot. The same applies to the fairways and the rest of the coursePlease repair all divots.
The present conditions make it impossible to allow carts on the course, until further notice.

Mike Valiant,     Head Green Keeper

Mens’ Club Captains’ Report

A warm welcome to all members who have joined the Pines Golf Club recently. Although conditions are not conducive to playing golf, we hope that you enjoy what the Club has to offer in terms of our general hospitality.
Hello to members as we are obviously trying to work out how to play winter golf, how to avoid the high shot and trying to play smart golf. It is always interesting to hear on a Sunday afternoon the strategic theories that some average players have about how to play this game in the winter. Which is what this game can bring, time together to explain its complex difficulty or the tales we share within the foursome…..priceless!
On 4th September we visit Hikurangi to play our annual interclub match for the Bull-Whimp shield. This has been an annual event since 1960 when the Presidents of Whakapara and Onerahi Golf Clubs donated the shield hence the name. Whakapara shifted to Hikurangi and Onerahi became The Pines but the annual fixture still continues after fifty years. One Pines member remembers playing for Whakapara at Onerahi. There have been plenty of great contests over the years especially at the 19th at Hikurangi when they had floodlights on the 18th green run by a noisy generator. The hospitality at Hiku is top class so please keep Sept. 4th for a great day of golf. The Pines are the current holders and the shield hangs on the corner of the bar where Hiku members are reminded that they do not have it.
Fixtures scheduled for the 4th have been carried forward to September 11th.

Junior Golf
Just like everyone else, our Juniors have been unable to play on the course for some time now. But they have been able to play elsewhere. Junior Pennants has now finished and The Pines came third in our group, largely due to the fact that we struggled to field a full team for most of the competition. Currently we are coming third in the ‘Top of the Harbour ’ competition held on different local courses over each school holidays throughout the year. The next round begins on Tuesday July 19th at Mt Denby and then again on Tuesday 26th at Mangawhai.
Our top two Juniors have been playing very well lately. Luke Brown won the Northland Matchplay Championship recently and was placed third in the more recent Wellsford Open 54 Hole Tournament. Sam Purdie placed 10th in the same competition and has also been selected for the Northland under 15 age group team, playing at No.1.
Our  warm  congratulations go to both these boys – they are turning into very fine golfers and are a credit to the Club.
Pat Martin has kindly agreed to coach entry-level Juniors from Parua Bay Primary school on Friday afternoons over the next month and this should result in our gaining a number of new Juniors. Fingers crossed about the weather!

 Did you Know ?
Have had a number of interesting discussions recently about whether you are allowed to have the flag attended when putting /chipping/ playing from beyond the Green surface edge. Here is what the Rule Book has to say:
Rule 17.1 Flagstick Attended, Removed or Held Up
“Before making a stroke from anywhere on the course, the player may have the flagstick attended, removed or held up to indicate the position of the hole.
If the flagstick is not attended, removed or held up before the player makes a stroke, it must not be attended, removed or held up during the stroke or while the player’s ball is in motion if doing so might influence the movement of the ball”.
There are three notes which are attached to this rule which you can also read on page 80, Rules of Golf (R&A) 2008-2011.
So there you go!

Hi Everyone
Suddenly we are well into the New Year with autumn here and winter fast approaching.
The Pines Pairs has been and gone. The whole event was made a huge success. I have heard nothing but praise from all participants. Hopefully we will show a healthy profit. Thanks to our course staff and volunteers for bringing the course up to the required high standard.  Thanks to club members, Richard Chatfield and Paul Fletcher (Jae Services), for the generous donation of First Division winner’s prizes. Thanks to Guy and all the ladies who helped with the food. Thanks to Sue Price for all the time spent organizing prizes. And of course thanks to the Match Committee and helpers who made it happen.
Our upgrade of the Club’s carts is complete with the recent delivery of another three. We now have a very respectable fleet of six, matched, 2007, Yamaha, petrol powered carts. These should give the club many years of trouble free service. Routine maintenance should be minimal and low cost. These machines have the advantage of being able to run all day without recharge. It seems that these days many prospective visitors simply do not come if they are unable to book a cart. The two leased BCC carts have gone back. Thanks to the Women’s Committee for their financial assistance.
While I am on about carts, you may recall that in the last Pitchmark I mentioned that the Committee has been investigating the possibility of constructing a secure building for the storage of ‘member owned’ carts or golf gear.
The idea is to extend the playing life of our ageing membership by offering this facility. A building similar to that used at Whangaroa GC and Northern Wairoa GC is proposed and possibly built at the bottom end of the car park. Plans have been drawn for a 10 cubicle building with the possibility of later extension. We are hoping to mainly finance the project by seeking $1000, up front, from tenants in exchange for a 5 year lease. Alternatively rent would be $250 per year. There has already been strong interest in the project with verbal bookings for more than half. Formal expressions of interest are now sought. Give me a call if you would like further info or if you have any concerns. Ph 4362777. If you are interested you should complete the form at the end of this newsletter.
Other news
-The clubhouse continues operate profitably and without fuss. Guy is doing a marvelous job and is taking a huge load off my shoulders. Colin Cooke now works 2 days per week easing the burden on the bar volunteers.
-We hope to replace our aged Greens Mower in the next few weeks. Recent applications for grants for this purpose have been unsuccessful. Therefore money will have to come from Club reserves. We do not expect to borrow for this purchase, however interest free finance may be available.
-Heavy rain in late January caused considerable damage to the approaches at the 17th green and to the culvert adjacent to the 11th green. The usual volunteers have made repairs and things are pretty much back to normal.
-The excellent growing season again is keeping staff and volunteers busy. Rain + warm weather = more grass, more work, more diesel, less green fees, less bar takings. However our place is looking a picture and we are the envy of other local Clubs.
-We were recently fortunate to gain a $2100 (gst ex) from the Oxford Trust for drainage. This money will be spent renovating the drain adjacent to the 2nd, 15th and 16th fairways.
- The Committee recently approved spending to tidy the wilderness area between the 3rd and 8th fairways. Watch this space.
- Our major sponsor, Pacific Homes, has begun the construction of the Accessible (paraplegic) Toilet. This is a WDC requirement .
- Late News. Guy will be leaving us for a three month OE beginning 01.05.11. Colin will take over Guy’s duties during that time. The committee is yet to decide whether we employ extra staff or if we try to fill the gap with volunteers.

Regards
Mike G

Course News

The Pines Pairs have come and gone for another 12 months. The course was in fantastic condition and we had many favourable comments from players.  Thanks to all those involved in preparing the course.  This involves many more hours and work and expenses than normal.
A new John Deere greens mower to arrive within the next 2 -3 weeks.  Two years ago we wouldn't even have considered getting quotes for new machinery.  However this has been made possible mainly by the Club’s band of dedicated volunteers, who took over the workload of a third staff member, saving the club many thousands of dollars annually.    More workers are needed to relieve the current aging team, (not you Oyster) and spread the workload.  (Tony, Cuffy, John and yours truly are all knocking seventy.)
Graham Galland has completed the drainage work between the 15th and 16th fairways, which will further improve winter conditions.  A grant from the Oxford Trust of $2,100. helped pay for this project.  A big thanks to the Oxford Trust- this is the second time they  have recently funded our drainage work.  A number of new crossings will be in place before too long.
Work is under way to tidy up the scruffy triangle block on the side of the eighth fairway to a stage where it  can be planted and kept mown.
Anyone wanting the services of a competent excavation operator, I recommend you contact Graham  (Detail Excavations)   for quality workmanship.
Please don't hesitate to put forward your own ideas and suggestions for course improvements.

News from Women's President Trish & Club Captain Carol.

We started the golfing year with an Ambrose - 18 holers & 9 holers playing together.  We have had great weather & our programme is in full swing.  Pennants have started & we have busy days ahead at The Pines with weekend Pennants, 18 hole Pennants & 9 hole Pennants being played here over the next couple of weeks.  Our 18 hole Team’s Tournament is on 31st March.  Please make up at team if you haven't already done so.  I believe our Sunday players have entered a team - fantastic!
Socially, on 3rd February the Tuesday women spent a day visiting 2 gardens - one a smallish city garden & another in Ruatangata with a large lake & a walk through bush & some stunning rocks  - some 12,000 yr old!  We finished with "high tea" at Carol Lindsay's (our 9 hole convenor).
Thank you to the women who helped at the February 9 hole two day tournament.
Also to those women who gave up their weekend to help make The Pines Pairs a huge success.
Another thank you to the women who worked at the twilight window each Tuesday afternoon.  No small effort after Tuesday golf when all we want to do is go home & have a  wine & put our feet up!
It makes our jobs easier when we have willing helpers for all of these tasks.
 Trish Miller & Carol Jessop.

Sponsorship

We are constantly thankful to our sponsors as without them our club would not be able to undertake the many projects to continually improve our course for our members.
Pacific Homes are currently underway with our disabled toilet (a requirement by the Whangarei District Council) and this will also enable our members to ‘spend a penny’ without having to have the clubrooms open. So big thanks to Pacific Homes.

Our recent Pines Pairs was successful and we owe a HUGE thanks to Richard Chatfield and Paul Fletcher for both providing $1,000 worth of goods to each of the winners in Division One. Their generosity ensured the entries for Division One were stacked with low handicap players.
Another major sponsor for this tournament was Harvey Normans who provided quality prizes at a generous discount.
Other contributors on the day for sponsorship were:
Active Refrigeration      Guyco
New World                     Onerahi Garage
Placemakers                   Geoff Scott
Adams Trimmer             Guthrie Bowron
Sponsorship in general
We still have spare spaces available for sponsorship.  Sponsors do not need to front up with cash and arrangements we would consider would be products or services to the value of the annual cost of sponsoring a hole.  If you are interested or know of any business that you consider might be interested in supporting your Club, please contact me.

Hi Everyone
The seasons are finally changing with (at last) an inch of rain in the gauge this morning. Clearly we need a lot more but let’s hope for a ‘dry-ish’ winter at The Pines. The drought has been a financial blessing for the Club with record income from green fees, bar takings, cart hire and catering.
Twilight has been and gone for another season. It has been a big success. Thank you to all those who assisted with the organization, especially Splinter.
I also wish to acknowledge the very generous support of Onerahi New World.
The Pines Pairs is also behind us for another season. Barrells 100% was again our main sponsor for this event. Although entries were down, the event was a success in terms of financial return and entrant satisfaction. Good on you Mickey and helpers. The spot prize of accommodation to the value of $1200 was very well received. (kindly donated by the Brown family) It was good to see this prize go to regular entrant, Brent Kokich. Those not present for the prize-giving may not be aware that two members, Richard Chatfield and Paul Fletcher, have pledged $1000 each toward the First Division winner’s prize for next year. I’m sure we will have a very full field next year.
There has been a change in the administration of the Club’s finances with the resignation of John Anderson as Treasurer. Leonie Cuff has taken on the role as Temporary Treasurer. Leonie is already the Women’s Treasurer and is in charge of all Membership.

Those playing on the course will have noticed the result of a couple of working bees lately. (1) The large dead pine tree at the 12th Tee has gone. The funds from the sale of the firewood are going toward the improvement of the Green keeper’s facilities. (2) Selected greens were recently cored. 3) Some trees on the 13th fairway have been taken out. Thanks to all those who went out of their way to assist.
Organizing the replacement of the bar chiller is progressing slowly. I am hopeful that all work will be complete before the end of the financial year. (31.06.10) This will require some reconstruction work on the building. Offers of assistance from any members with building experience will be gratefully accepted.
The upgrade of our cart fleet is complete for the time being with the sale today of the last of our old Ezgo battery carts. I will be recommending to the incoming committee (in August) that we replace the 2 BCC leased carts with the purchase of more Yamaha petrol carts.
Until next time.
Regards Mike G
Sponsorship
We would like to announce a new major sponsor for The Pines Golf Club:
Placemakers Whangarei
Placemakers have signed a sponsorship agreement for a 12 month period and we thank them for their support, particularly during these difficult economic times. You will all see a new sign next to Pacific Homes sign shortly. As part of the sponsorship agreement, Placemakers have one day free use of the golf course and they are using their day on 3rd September to run a golf tournament. The proceeds of the tournament will be used to support Prostate Cancer, so mark this date in your diaries as this is heading to being a great event not to be missed.
Sponsorship in general
We still have spare holes available for sponsorship. Sponsors do not need to front - up with cash and arrangements we would consider would be products or services to the value of the annual cost of sponsoring a hole. If you are interested or know of any business that you consider might be interested in supporting your Club, please contact me.

Course News
What's been happening around the course? - well, Brian "CHAINSAW " Cuff has been having a ball.
Great to work with our "Cuffy". Just look at a limb or tree, nod and step aside, and BRMM BRMM the deeds done.
Great effort from the ‘Team along the stream’, removing overhanging branches. What started as a quick prune-up turned into a major event, with about 25 truck -loads being carted away. This will help with the flow of water when the rain does come.
The dead pine tree beside the men's 12th tee also got the chop, split into firewood and sold, with proceeds going to the staff lunchroom upgrade. Sorry about the resident "shag", Splinter, but I doubt there was much shagging around before she found a new tree.
Some pruning along the 13th hole and behind the 15th green has also been done, with 2 poplars being "pruned" at ground level. Others to get the axe and probably done by the time this goes to print, are the large poplar on the 14th tee, and others beside the 16th tee.
The new post and rope safety rail down the track between 7th green and 8th tee should help. Our thanks to Vulcan Steel who provided us with the galvanised piping.
With funds from the sale of firewood being available, the Smoko Room project should be under way shortly. We have the donation of a Ranch slider, sink top, vanity, doors, and some framing timber. Further donations of framing timber 100 x 50 or cash would be much appreciated - Mickey Mac has already donated $60 and I'm sure others will follow suit.
Overall, a colossal effort from our dedicated team of volunteers. Thanks guys. Les, Course Convenor. Junior Golf Junior numbers have been increasing steadily over the past two months and to help this along we have decided to accept Juniors under the age of ten with the proviso that parents stay with the kids and help out where necessary. So far this has been successful with parents taking an enthusiastic part in all the sessions. We think we need to take a long term view, especially with the young ones, and we hope to see the decision pay dividends in a couple of year’s time. A number of the ‘older’ new members are also shaping up as very good prospects for next year’s Pennants team.
Coaching sessions, which have generally been well attended, will continue on Saturday afternoons until wet weather makes the course too difficult to handle. Our top Junior Luke Brown, recently had a win in Championship Pennants playing at No1, which was very pleasing to see, considering handicaps do not apply. He also played along with Les Scott and Angus Lyall in the recent National Left-Handers Tournament at Mt Denby and with some very good golf, was placed 5 = overall. He is now receiving professional coaching as part of the Northland Academy squad development programme. We are also very pleased to have Shane Brandso join the Junior Coaching team.

With this magnificent weather golf is moving along nicely and we are enjoying the course, but the rain will be very welcome when it comes.
Our NZ Golf Women's National 18 hole Home Links competition was won by Machiko Smith with a nett 62 followed by Joy McDonald on 66, Marilyn Ralph on 69 and Susannah Starkie on 71. These girls will represent The Pines at Whangaroa on Saturday the 15th May.
The Home Links competition - Aoteroa Cup was won by Anne Prescott with a nett 70. She also won the Veterans Trophy. Coronation Medal was won by Marilyn Ralph with a nett 71 and she also won the Gross Cup with a gross of 86.
Our LGU (Ladies Golf Union) competition held each month was won in February by: Silver - Elva Kerr, Bronze I - Jenny Tito, Bronze II - Patricia Johnson, Bronze III - Treve Rowe. March: Marilyn Ralph - Silver, Joy McDonald - Bronze I, Machiko Smith - Bronze II and Treve Rowe - Bronze III. April: Marilyn Ralph - Silver, Anne Prescott - Bronze I and Jeanie Allen - Bronze II. Congratulations to all those girls. It is nice to see Jeanie and Anne playing 18 holes again.
This year got away to a very busy start, still without a caterer. Many, many thanks to all our members who pulled out all stops and catered for Men's Pennants, The Pines Pairs, Ladies Mixed Tournament etc., It is very nice having Jan Webb working away happily in the kitchen now.
Our Pennants teams are going well and sitting, at this stage about mid -field.
‘Sunday Ladies’ organised a very successful Mixed Tournament on Saturday, 20 March. They made $1402.50 for the Club and the raffle money of $303.00 was given to the Ladies Committee. Well done! An excellent effort.
Our Teams Tournament on April the 1st was also very successful and enjoyable.
Cushla Stenberg
Men’s Club Captain
The big YUM YUM is coming to a conclusion. Frank will soon inform us of a date and who is cooking. A lot of fun and challenges was had by all when the course was played backwards recently. Dee Brown won the Codlin Trophy and Mickey Mac the mens.
Les Goddard is leading the order of merit after three rounds. Toby Ralph and Beth Brinn lead their respective event for the Northland Computer Solutions Trophy. One member who enjoys his golf is Fred Foster. Fred joined the club three years ago and until two months ago never got below a 38 handicap. He has since won the Ross Trophy. So all you beginners, please don't give up, good golfing comes to those who wait.
Up until recently thirteen holes were required to be played for handicapping pNow the handicapping requires only seven holes to be played.
Distance finders can now be legally used in competition. These gadgets must be used solely for finding distance and nothing else.
To avoid slow play, tee off before marking your card should you have the honour. Cards should be marked and signed before putting your gear away. There are B.B.Q tables for this purpose at rear and front of the clubhouse.
Due to the dry conditions most of our handicaps are lower than normal. After thirty years of golf one player has dropped 16 shots. I have been a member for 28 years and never before seen the ‘Wishing Well ‘dry.

THE PINES GOLF CLUB
PITCH-MARK August 2009

PRESIDENT’S REPORT:
Hi Everyone
I think you will all agree that the work done by volunteers and staff during the summer months has
really paid off. Despite recent heavy rain the drainage projects and cart path construction has made
winter golf at The Pines far more enjoyable. I understand that plans are already underway for a big
drainage project on the 12th Fairway next season. Keep up the good work Les and co.
I must mention the recent fund raising Auction held at the clubhouse in July. Women’s President, Trish
Millar, and a group of willing helpers took on the task of providing about 80 members and guests with
an evening of fun and entertainment. Once again the women gave the rest of us a lesson on how to
organise a successful event. Thanks to all those who participated through organizing, donating and
purchasing (and just attending). Most importantly the club banked $5000.00. - Amazing.
Has everyone noticed the planting work done recently (lead by Tony and Margaret Taylor). The bank
between the carpark and main road has been tidied and planted. Shrubs have also been placed
against the tee screens at the 7th, 15th, and 16th. Well done to all involved.
At our committee meeting on Thursday 16.07.09, Treasurer John Anderson, presented a Financial
Report which I describe as the most positive I have seen in my 20 months as President. John has done
weeks and weeks of work on the clubs books and we go into this next financial year with a tight
budget that I believe we can work to. To date debt has been reduced sharply, spending is well
controlled and we have set aside funds for future machinery purchases.
The clubs insurances have been reviewed during the past few months. Member, Grant Adams, of
Adams Trimmer Nauman Insurance Brokers has battled on our behalf for a much needed upgrade.
Not only are we now better covered (the clubhouse is finally insured for replacement) but he has
saved us nearly $3000 in yearly premiums. Thanks also to Gary Wendt for preparing a comprehensive
photographic record of all our insured items.
Committee Member Sue Price has (along with Jeff of MBS and a small group from the committee)
taken on the task of preparing the, long overdue, Business and Marketing Plan for the club. More news
to come.
Last Sunday saw a full bus load of Members travel to Northern Wairoa for an interclub visit. I had the
pleasure of playing good golf with Splinter, Lyn (chuck) Adams, and Pom (NW secretary). Its always
good see how other clubs operate and we can learn a lot from such a visit. All who traveled enjoyed a
beautiful day and great hospitality. Splinter deserves a pat on the back for (single handed) raising
funds and making this event happen. Club spirit is alive and well.
Also at Northern Wairoa on Sunday our Junior Pennants Team played in their competition final against
Mangawhai. Luke Brown, Jacob Brown, Richard Devine and Chris Creswell were ablely lead on the
day by coach Dave Mundell. All played well however the event ended in controversy (in the dark)
with a tie being ruled. The Pines believes it is the winner and is appealing the result.
Until next time.
Regards
Mike Gavin, President

LADIES PRESIDENT AND LADIES CLUB CAPTAIN:
Congratulations to the Pines Womens 18 hole North Zone Pennant Team – winners of the overall 18
hole Pennant Division, beating Wellsford convincingly in the finals. The team players were, Ella Crane,
Leonie Cuff, Carolyn Rouse, Treve Rowe, Machiko Smith and Elva Kerr.
Our Womens President, Trish Miller, a big thank you for organising a hugely successful auction night on
the 17th July.
On Tuesday 14th July, the 9 and 18 holers joined in for golf, lunch and a fun plant and white elephant
auction, raising $400.00.
Only a few Club fixtures are left to be finalised with the next main event being the Strokeplay Champs
19/20 September and 9 holers on Tuesday 15 September and Tuesday 22 September.
WOMENS A.G.M. TUESDAY 25 AUGUST, starting at 9.00a.m.
Trish Miller and Betty Scott, Ladies President and Ladies Club Captain
Woman Pennants Team – Winners of 18 Hole Pennants
Machiko Smith, Elva Kerr, Ella Crane, Treve Rowe, Leonie Cuff, Carolyn Rouse.
CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT:
This will be my last report as the men’s Club Captain. After serving two years in this position, it is time for
some new blood to serve the club.
I have enjoyed being Captain. It has been very hard work but very rewarding. May I thank all those
that have supported me and I hope that whoever takes on the role enjoys the challenges that lay
ahead.
The Match Play Championships have been completed and the winners of the various divisions were as
follows. Starting with the Flights Division, D Grade was won by Mo Brown, Junior division by Mike Bertie,
Intermediate division by Tom Brown and for the Senior division by Anthony Gilmour.
The winners of the Match Play Championships were Kevin Rudd for D Grade, John Pelasio for Junior
Division, Shane Brandso for Intermediate Division and Ian Billington for the Senior Division.
The Parua Bay Tavern Trophy and the Attwood Trophy were both won by Mike Bertie. The Cocks Cup
was won by Toby Ralph and Keith Webb.
Congratulations to all the above winners.
Our Junior section was involved in Pennant semi finals recently. Congratulations go to Richard Devine,
Chris Creswell, Jacob and Luke Brown who defeated Whangarei and now play Mangawhai in the
finals.
The winners of the final will get a trip to Kauri Cliffs for a round of golf, so go you boys.
The new Rules Books governing our game of golf are available to anyone who wants a copy. They are
on the table beside the main front door. If you cannot find them please ask for a copy, they are free.
Forthcoming / Ongoing competitions
The Captains and Vice Captains trophies are currently being played for and the President and Vice
President trophies will be the next competitions that start. Also in the schedule is the Grandfathers Tray.
Talking of Grandfathers; on Wednesday 24th June my son and daughter in law, who reside in the UK
had their first child. A son named William Michael who weighed in at 6lb 3ozs. All are doing well and in
December they are coming to New Zealand so hopefully, for those that are interested, you will able to
see him.
Keith Webb, Club Captain.
BRIEF FINANCIAL SUMMARY
The financial records are currently with our Accountant so once finalised we can then confirm the
AGM date which at this stage is looking like late August/early September. Financially we have
managed the pay off a large amount of debt and only just started using our overdraft facility. We
have been tightening the control over spending and procedures, and I think the members will see the
results of this policy in the annual financial statements. As most members will be aware we have had a
10 month financial period so comparison with last year will be distorted. The club’s income sources
remain a serious area of concern.
Considerable time has been spent, with the assistance of our Accountant sorting out the computer
accounting records to agree with his last years statements. Also we have integrated the Women’s and
Junior’s accounts into the accounting system. A start has been made on recording the club’s financial
procedures.
John Anderson, Treasurer
COURSE NEWS:
Not a lot happening around the course due to winter conditions. Less rough mowing needed with the
frosts slowing growth.
Drainage work done over the summer is working well with excess water disappearing quicker.
The current storms caused only minor damage which was cleaned up by the usual band of volunteers.
Greens and fairways are in excellent condition. (Well done Roughie and Jake)
We plan to core the greens during the first week in September. The course will be closed for 2 days
during coring and sanding.
Many thanks to the cart users who are taking more care where they drive. We intend developing more
paths over summer.
We have applied for a grant to upgrade the current substandard staff facilities. However grants are at
present very hard to come by, so chances of being successful are not great. Thanks to Mickey
McDonald and Blair Dempsey for supplying estimates for the project. (Quotes have to be supplied with
grant applications). We have to consider other ways to raise the money.
Thanks to Tony and Margaret Taylor for their work in planting and laying chips along the carpark road
frontage. Also thanks to Brian Taylor for taking on the role of Health & Safety Officer.
Good Golfing, Les Scott - Course Convenor
JUNIOR GOLF:
The Junior Pennants final has been on our mind for some time now. Yesterday it all happened – and I
mean all!!!. After the morning’s play we had two wins and two draws, putting us well placed going into
the afternoon second round. To cut a long afternoon short, the results were reversed – two losses and
two halves, leaving us in a tie with Mangawhai and it went down to the last putt on the final hole.
The Junior rules for Northland state that in the event of a tie, a ‘sudden death playoff’ will take place
between team captains so this was got underway immediately, as the light was fading. After
Mangawhai’s third shot landed somewhere in the hazard, their team manager informed me that it was
too dark to continue play and that they were returning to the clubhouse. I told him that we would wait
for the referee who had already been sent for, for his decision. About ten minutes passed and no
referee, so I made the decision for Luke to complete the hole, which he did, scoring a par 5, witnessed
by a gallery of about 20 people. According to reports, the referee had witnessed the tee-off and had
then gone home. Unable to contact the course referee for the day or the chief referee for Northland,
Warren Allan, the Junior Committee comprising Pennants Convenor and Golf Northland Junior
Organiser, following a further Junior Pennants rule, made the decision to award the Pennant to both
clubs jointly. So, in one way or another, we won.
I have nothing but praise for the professional way our boys conducted themselves throughout the
tournament, for the hard work they put into their preparation and for the high standard of their play. I
am sure you will all join me in giving them our warmest congratulations. The winners gold medals will be
presented on a suitable occasion in the near future to Luke Brown, Jacob Brown, Chris Cresswell and
Richard Devine and the Pennant presented to the club.
On a different note – the Junior coaches decided some time ago to discontinue coaching on a
Saturday afternoon until the weather and course conditions improve – so coaching will begin again on
Saturday, September the 5th at 1:30 pm. We look forward to seeing all you keen Juniors again quite
soon.
The club Junior Matchplay Champs will take place soon after that date, so any Junior wishing to take
part should contact Les Scott or Dave Mundell to confirm.

THE PINES GOLF CLUB
PITCH-MARK March 2009
PRESIDENT’S REPORT:
Hi everyone
Well, Christmas has been and gone and as I write this it appears the long spell of fine weather is behind
us with some much needed rain on the way.
Those of you who have played the course recently will have noticed considerable changes with a
number of improvement projects being undertaken by the Course Committee and volunteers over the
last few weeks.
-The biggest project has been the drainage work undertaken on the (previously) swampy area
between the 8th and 14th fairways. This work could not have begun without the generous financial
donation and hard work of Brian and Leonie Cuff.
-Work has begun on the preservation of the creek walls at the bridges on the 4th and 6th fairways.
-The drains and pond between the 12th and 16th fairways have been improved.
-The drain between the 10th fairway and the road has been cleaned.
-The screen above the 7th tee has been completed.
- The unsightly mess beside the cart shed has been tidied.
The most pleasing aspect of all this work is that it has been achieved through the generosity and hard
work of members with little or no expenditure from club funds.
Thanks to all the usual suspects especially; Les Scott, Brian Cuff, Barry Jessop, Tony Valiant, Jimmy Leef,
Peter Lister.
Thanks also to Tony Workman and Pacific Homes for the use of trucks and diggers. Please understand
that the loan of this gear is in addition to the generous sponsorship we receive from Pacific Homes
each year.
If you are in the clubhouse grab a flyer on NZ Golf’s new Ultimate Drive promotion to increase
membership. Under this scheme generous incentives and prizes are available to new members and to
existing members who introduce a prospect to the Club. Talk to Carol Jessop if you think you may
qualify. It would be good to see members getting behind this scheme.
The incentive introduced to encourage early payment of this year’s subs has proved a popular
scheme. Many members took advantage of the green fee passes to bring friends and family for a
golfing experience over the holiday season. Some people have argued that this scheme has cost us
money by way of green fees. I believe we have managed to give a little back to the members and
that we have attracted people to the club who may not otherwise have played.
The 10 year membership offer has closed for this season. Eight members took up the offer raising
$48000 in prepaid subscriptions. This money has gone entirely towards paying off debt.
The Administrator (Carol), Treasurer (John) and I are at present working thru the membership lists. Some
late subscription payers will receive a phone call to check their intentions. Please understand that the
end of February is the time of the year at which we become liable to pay affiliation fees to Golf NZ and
Golf Northland. Therefore anyone who has not paid their sub or has not made an arrangement to pay
will be deleted from the Dot Golf System. (and, expected to pay green fees)
Finally don’t miss entry to the Srixon Pairs Qualifying Tournament to be held at The Pines on Saturday
11.04.09. Captain Keith and I were the successful local winners last year and therefore enjoyed a great
weekend’s golf in the Bay of Plenty. We are pairing up again this year and will be defending our title
against all challengers. Prizes are generous, our club benefits financially and men’s, women’s or mixed
pairs can all compete. See the flyer on the notice board at the club or give Keith a phone call.
Regards
Mike Gavin, President
LADIES PRESIDENT AND LADIES CLUB CAPTAIN:
A good start to the golf season with the Ambrose on main opening day. 33 Women enjoyed Opening
Day on Tuesday 3 February. The weekend and Tuesday players have started their competitions. The
draws for the L.L.4 b.b.b. and Ellen Moyle Tray matchplay events have been done with plenty of time
allowed to play matches this season.
First rounds of the pennants have been played, for the 6 teams of women – 24 players involved this
year.
The women are working with the 9 hole Convenors over the 3 day mixed veterans Tournament, at The
Pines on 23, 25 and 26 February 2009.
The hedge was cut again by Phoebe and Jan – Thanks. Also cleaning by Jan Webb (Keith’s better
half) in the greens staff lunchroom – Thanks. Trish and Carol have done a wonderful job sewing the
new flags for the pins.
The Pines Women’s 18 hole Teams Tournament arrangements are in hand. Entries are required by
Thursday 2 April – Teams of 4 women.
Women’s Pennants will be held at The Pines on 23 March and 6 April 2009.

CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT:
Well summer has arrived and it is showing with some of the scoring that is taking place.
A couple of trophies that have been played and won include the Summer Cup (par) which was won
by Robert Woodley, and the Summer Cup (stableford) which was won by Keith Webb.
Forthcoming / Ongoing competitions
Sunday 18th January saw the qualifying round for Top Dog begin. This is now well under way with some
good golf being played.
The Pines Pairs Qualifying Round will be on Saturday 28th February with the Finals being played over the
weekend of Saturday 7th and Sunday the 8th March.
With regard to this competition, the club will be looking for volunteers to assist over this weekend. This
will include car park duties, spotting at strategic places and plenty of other jobs. If you can spare any
time leading up to this event please speak to me or any other member of the committee.
I would like to thank all those volunteers; you know who you are, for their efforts in keeping the course
the way it looks. It takes a lot of effort to fill bags of metal and cement and put them under bridges so
they do not wash away with the first rush of water. Also cleaning and repairing drains and weed eating
the areas that mowers cannot reach.
Without your continued support and energy we would not be playing on the best course in
Whangarei.
Keith Webb, Club Captain.
COURSE NEWS:
Since the last Pitchmark many jobs on our list of projects have either been started or are nearing
completion. Sincere thanks to all the many willing helpers.
Work has included fencing around recycling drums and created a covered area for firewood. (Thanks
to PLACEMAKERS for supplying all materials) We strongly encourage members to support all of our
much needed sponsors and when you do please tell them you are from The Pines Golf Club.
Sandbagging around the bridges has started and this method of protecting the river banks will
continue in other areas of concern. Thanks to Barry Stenberg for his input in coming up with this
method. Donations of used bags and cement would be greatly appreciated. By using the shingle out
of the creek makes this a very cheap alternative to using rocks, which are very expensive to transport
and place.
Drainage to Number 8 fairway is completed and we should see a huge improvement over the winter
months. A huge thanks to Brian and Leonie Cuff for donating the 2 x 100 metre rolls of Novaflo.
Some drainage improvements are underway on the 12 hole. (Well done to Jimmy Leaf for his expert
handling of the digger). Most of this work could not have been achieved without the generosity of our
Patron, Tony Workman (PACIFIC HOMES) by supplying the truck and digger. MANY, MANY THANKS
TONY.
Fulton Hogan have cleaned the number 10 road drain which must help keep the 10th fairway a lot
drier next winter and it looks much tidier.
Plans are in place to plant the carpark road frontage. Tony Taylor has come up with plans, plants and
know how. All he needs are some willing helpers when ready to start.
The new flags look great, thanks to Trish, Carol and Roughie.
The GREENS
Due to an electrical breakdown with the irrigation pump, we had two days without watering during our
hottest weekend, which has resulted in some greens suffering badly. They are recovering slowly under
Roughie’s loving care and already are starting to look better.
The greens will be cored on Wednesday 8 April 2009, which will also speed up the full recovery. Just to
add to our water problem, some of the sprinkler heads are either the incorrect type or in the wrong
place. Water pressure at some greens is low, especially at number 10 green and therefore needs a
sprinkler head to suit the low pressure. Patrick White has inspected the irrigation system along with
Roughie and has made recommendations to improve the situation – problem is it all costs MONEY.
I can assure everyone that Keith Milson (Consultant), Roughie and our PGG Wrightsons rep are doing
everthing possible to keep our greens in top order. The many fungal diseases that attack greens, thrive
in Northlands hot humid weather, keeping Roughie busy with a regular spray programme. Once the
weather cools down much of this problem will go away. Jacob will be away at a block course at
Palmerston North in April, so we will need extra help that week.
Good Golfing from the course committee.
Les Scott,
Course Convenor

JUNIOR GOLF:
The Junior Coaching programme got underway for the New Year on Saturday 14th of February with a
reasonable turnout of players. Now that the school year is well underway we are hoping that the
turnout equals or exceeds the very pleasing level of last year. Coaching will be again held on a
Saturday afternoon but will begin an hour later, at two o’clock, to allow those who also play Saturday
morning sport, more time to get ready for the afternoon session. We will also be changing the
coaching sessions to fortnightly, rather than weekly, with a view to reviewing the situation later,
depending on whether we can attract additional coaches to help with the training sessions. If you
would like to help out, either as a parent/ player or club member, we would love to hear from you.
Coaching training is available from both the existing coaches and Golf Northland and you will be
teaching beginners rather than advanced players.
The Junior Pennants programme also gets underway on Sunday 1st of March at the Whangarei Golf
Club, Mt Denby. We have entered one team of four players in a twelve team two division competition.
Our team is Luke Brown (9.5), Jacob Brown (11.3), Chris Cresswell (14.7) and Richard Devine (16.7) and
they are a very competitive and keen unit. We wish them well and will keep you posted on the website
with team results. The team gets to play a variety of courses that includes Kaitaia, Kerikeri and
hopefully, Carrington or Kauri Cliffs.
In January a group of our members sold raffle tickets on behalf of the Onerahi Lions Club and our share
of the proceeds raised $450.00 to help with funding Junior Golf. Our thanks go out to the ticket sellers
(Les & Betty Scott, John Anderson, Carol Jessop and Tony Valiant) for their generous contributions of
time and effort. A further fundraising auction of golfing gear kindly donated by David Smail is planned
for an appropriate occasion in the near future.
Dave Mundell, Convenor of Junior Golf
The Pines Website
The webite has recently been updated and now includes an Accommodation page, where selected
local accommodation venues have agreed to link to our site. This is designed to attract more green
fee players to the course and will be added to and extended as more accommodation providers
come on board. You can also link to dot.golf, Golf Northland and NZ Golf through the front page of
our site, if you wish to check your handicap entries or to find out what is going on in the region or on
the national scene.

CLUB GOSSIP AND RUMOURS
It was noted by Keith Webb at the Xmas Cheer Tournament that the J B’s were prominent among the
top end of the prizes. Just to remind everyone, the J B’s are Jack Baker and our own Jack Broome!!!
Jack Broome has been reported as saying that he had failed to reach his goal last year of winning 7
hams and meat packs; he only got 6. Also that he said his golf had improved markedly after reading
Jack Baker’s book on golf!!!
As the Irish say: “I will tell you a true story, but, I tend not to believe it myself”.

Two of our members have past the 1000 rounds mark in the Dot Golf Handicapping system.
Trevor MacKenzie reached 1000 rounds on 10 May 2008.
Donald (Spider) McKenzie on 28 December 2008.
Well done Trevor and Spider!!!
A REQUEST FROM THE HANDICAPPERS:
The handicapping system is now very simple and quick. It would make it a lot quicker if players could
please “put their completed cards in the slot, opened up, face down, and head first”. If you are unsure
ask Mickey McDonald, men’s handicapper.
RECENT CHANGES TO GOLF RULES:
There have been a number of Golf Rule changes recently. Here are some of them that the average
club golfer may come up against.
1 Accidental Deflection:
The penalty for accidental deflection of the ball by the player, his partner, their caddies or
equipment is reduced to one penalty stroke in both match and stroke play in a revision the
Rule 19-2. Previously this was two strokes in stroke play or loss of hole in match play. So now if a
player should hit his golf bag with his ball, it is just one stroke penalty in both stroke play and
match play. Gone are the days of a loss of hole for a ball played from a bunker bouncing back
and hitting the player who then lost the hole. One stroke penalty is sufficient for that
embarrassment.
2 Wrong Ball:
No longer will there be no penalty for hitting a wrong ball from a hazard, whether a bunker or a
water hazard. The same two stroke penalty in stroke play or loss of hole in match play will apply
to playing a wrong ball no matter where it lies. This means that Rule 12-2 will be revised
allowing a player to lift a ball in a bunker or water hazard for identification purposes. Clearly
Rule 15-3, Wrong Ball, has been changed to provide for this.
3 Non-conforming Club:
A revision to Rule 4-1 changes the penalty for carrying, but no using a non-conforming club
which is currently disqualification. In stroke play, the penalty is now two strokes per hole, with a
maximum penalty of four strokes per round. In match play, the state of the match is adjusted
by deducting one hole for each hole at which a breach occurred, with a maximum penalty of
two holes per round. This makes it the same as for carrying too many clubs. Previously, for
example, a player who carried a trial driver with clear plastic stretched over the head was
disqualified, even if he didn’t use it.
Another important change in Rules 24, 25 and 26 is that the term “Reasonable evidence” has been
replaced by “known or virtually certain” which is sometimes causing a degree of uncertainty when
players cannot immediately find their ball. A player may not assume that his ball is in a water hazard
(or abnormal ground condition or obstruction) simply because there is a possibility that it may be in
one of these conditions. In order for the player to proceed under Rule 24-3, 25-1c or 26-1 there must
be almost no doubt that the ball is in the condition, otherwise, a ball that is not found must be
considered lost outside the condition and the player must proceed under Rule 27-1 (Stroke and
Distance).
This makes a case for playing a Provisional Ball from the 4th tee when the ball goes right towards the
Lateral Water Hazard but could conceivably be on the 9th hole. If you don’t know where the ball is
and can’t find it the ball becomes a “Lost Ball”.
FROM: Warren Allen, Life Member and President of Northland Golf Referees Association
THE FOLLOWING TRUE STORY WAS GIVEN TO THE EDITOR:
A member was told by his wife that his golf clubs needed re-gripping. He asked his wife to get the
clubs re-gripped for a Christmas present.
Prior to Christmas he had averaged 29.50 Stableford points over 5 rounds, including 24 for the
Christmas Cheer Tournament.
After Christmas his next 5 rounds with the new grips were 38,40,39,43 and 44.
A big thanks to Ben Atherton, our local Golf Tutor and Golf Club re-gripper. For our member, Golfing is
once again enjoyable.
If you are having trouble with your golf it could be the grips, so contact Ben to get them checked out.
FROM THE PAST
15/20 or so years ago it was fashionable for golf clubs to have names for each of their hole. Mickey
McDonald has provided the Editor with an old Pines Golf Card, so I thought it maybe of interest to you.
It is also interesting to note the change of the hole, strokes and the meterage.

He says, "Sir, have you been drinking?"
"Just water," says the priest.
The trooper says, "Then why do I smell wine?"
The priest looks at the bottle and says, "Good Lord! He's done it again!"

PRESIDENTS REPORT
Hi everyone
Where has the year gone, Christmas is once again upon us.
We have a new committee up and running with renewed enthusiasm and commitment.
The good weather has bought out members who have not been seen for some time, along
with a good number of new faces at the club. Welcome to all new and returning members. If
you are short on info, or if you feel the urge for a game of golf, my number is 4362777.
Some members may not be aware that we hold MAP insurance. (Mutual Assistance Plan).
Most members pay toward this by a subs levy to NZ Golf. Currently approx half the clubs
throughout NZ participate in the scheme. It covers things such as broken or stolen clubs, ball
damage to vehicles on the road, ball damage to neighbouring properties, etc. A copy of the
policy document is on the notice board near the piano. Although not cheap insurance, it has
a very low excess of $15.
Recently I have signed documents updating an agreement with Headland Farm Park which
had expired. This relates to the land at the Eight Tee which we ‘borrow’ from them. For this we
(1) make water available for use in their orchard. (2) Hold insurance to cover any damage

caused through golf ball damage to the adjacent properties. (3) Display adequate Keep Out
signage on the boundary fence.
A further document was signed acknowledging our use of the strip of land along the top of
the 7th fairway. The deer fence is approx 2.5 meters above the surveyed boundary. We have
free use of this area.
Under our old constitution (2007) the Membership Year covered the period 1st December
through to 30th November. (Despite what has been printed on our subs accounts in past years
and what was printed on last years membership cards)
The Special General Meeting held 16.10.08 was to change the constitution so as to back up
the Membership Year and Financial Year by 2 months. So that this years 10 month sub covers
the period 1st December to 30th September.
If this is not confusing enough an error was made in the recent changes to the constitution.
This will hopefully be rectified in the new year (If the members agree). I take responsibility for
this last mistake and I apologise to all members.
Personally I would like to see a system introduced (at sometime in the future) whereby a
member could pay off their sub in 52 weekly (or 12 monthly) payments without penalty. There
are constitutional problems in doing this and some pluses and minuses to be considered,
however I believe this may give members some financial relief and help maintain or increase
our numbers.
Enough for now. Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Regards
Michael Gavin, President

Well the 2008 season is all but over. Just a couple of outstanding competitions to finish.
I hope that this season has gone well for you all and I wish all of you the very best for next

For some reason I was re elected to Club Captain for a second (and FINAL) time. I will try and
maintain the club’s high reputation as always.

McDONALD, Shane BRANDSO, Scott WILLIAMS and Dennis TAFFARD; unfortunately the men
did not get in the winners circle this time.
Forthcoming / Ongoing competitions
Sunday 14th December is the Pines Xmas Cheer. As usual this will be separate
morning and afternoon tournaments. Organise a Four and enter on the Xmas Cheer Sheet on
the Whiteboard in the clubhouse or give the club a ring.
The Summer Cup – Par and Stableford trophies will have either started or will be beginning
very shortly.
Over the past year I have sought advice from a number of members and I would just like to
thank you all for being supportive to me.
Whilst listening to members it became apparent that the clubs most prestigious competitions
were being played when the weather gods were against us. I have revamped next years
programme, hopefully to your liking.
Top Dog will be played during the months of January and February concluding with the final
the weekend before the Pines Pairs in March. This may give some of you a bit of practice
playing as pairs.
Stroke Play will now be taking place on the 4th weekend of March and Match Play continuing
directly afterwards. If the weather holds out the finals of Match Play will take place on the 2nd
weekend of May.
Two trophies appear to be missing from the collection.
These are the Match Play Flights Senior Trophy and the
Match Play Flights Junior Trophy.
If anyone can assist in there whereabouts please let me know
This just leaves me to wish you, your family and loved ones a very happy Christmas and a
prosperous New Year.

Course News
The course is in excellent condition, thanks mainly to Mike and Jacob’s efforts and better
weather. Mike has stepped up confidently to his role as Senior Green Keeper, well backed
by Jacob, who has also become a huge asset to our club. Both deserve a big pat on the
back.
Stage 1 of repairing flood damage to No 4 and 6 bridges has been completed.
Part 2 will be to place boulders around the end of the bridges to help lessen the damage
next time we have a major storm.
Thanks to the guys and Jan (muffins) Webb,(Keith’s better half) who helped clear the drain
along No 10 boundary, ready for Fulton Hogan to clean out. (if they ever turn up, that is.)
Our next major project will be planting a variety of trees, flaxes and grasses along the
foreshore of 11th hole, to stop further erosion. This will involve manpower rather than cash, so
we will be asking for groups of volunteers to help.
Thanks to “Kings Liquor” (Jack & Jayne Broome)for the donation of a prize for Roughy and
Jake to take up the annual Green keepers’ Tournament at Kerikeri. “Sex on the Beach”
sounds a great prize, (even if it is in a bottle). Roughy came fourth.
Positive ideas, comments and offer of help are always welcome, so please don’t hesitate to
contact any of the course committee.

Junior Golf
Apart from the limiting effects of a very wet winter when little golf was played, the
season has been a good one for the group of juniors who regularly turn up to
Saturday afternoon coaching sessions.
Attendance has been good now that warmer weather is with us and the turnout
varies between 10 and 14, which is very pleasing to see.
Notable achievements include Jacob Brown, our apprentice green keeper, receiving
the award for the most improved player in the Club, having dropped his handicap
during the year from just under 18 to a very creditable 10. Les Scott set Jacob the
target of reaching a 10 handicap by Christmas and he has easily achieved that with
time to spare. Jacob also won the Club Junior Stroke play competition.
Younger brother, Luke Brown has also made terrific progress during the year,
culminating with his winning the Junior Matchplay final, beating his brother Jacob
and shooting a 77 gross while playing off a 14 handicap. Luke also won the trophy for
the best nett score in Stroke play.
Both Jacob and Luke are being nominated for the Northland Junior Academy for
2009.
The coaching season for juniors will close on Saturday 13th of December and begin
again on the second Saturday in February. In the meantime, we are encouraging all
juniors to come and play a round or practice during the school holidays, so please
invite them to join you if they turn up at the course. A number of them are currently
looking to submit their five cards in order to qualify for their first handicap.
A group of our members will be selling raffle tickets on behalf of the Onerahi Lions
Club on Wednesday 10th December outside The Warehouse to raise money for the
Juniors’, so if you see us there don’t be surprised, and be generous!
Finally I would like to take the opportunity to thank my fellow coaches, Les & Betty
Scott, Tony Hockings and most recently, Ben Atherton our ex-English professional for
the tremendous work that they have put into Junior golf over the past year.
Have a great Christmas break and enjoy lots of golf.

CLUB GOSSIP AND RUMOURS
 Robert “Toby” Ralph claims to be Marilyn’s coach and without his expert
guidance would not have won the Northland Champ of Champs Bronze 1 Title.
 Les Goddard loaned “spider” McKenzie one of his bandages so “Spider” could
put it on his knee to avoid going to the working bees.
 Northland Golf Club are asking our club to hold more working bees because
the last one we had, the influx of The Pines Club members enabled them to
have an increased take of green fees and bar takings.
 Apparently Sherwood Park Golf Club have heard about Northland Golf Club
increase and have been making enquiries about when we are going to hold
our next working bee.

Ken Dabb has given the editor a copy of the Table of Contents from a
New Golf Book. I like chapter 19 – “Why male golfers will pay $7.00 a
beer on the course from the cart girl, plus give her a #3.00 tip, BUT then
balk at paying $4.50 at the 19th hole – OBVIOUSLY NOT THE PINES

PITCH-MARK                                                           AUGUST 2008

PRESIDENTS REPORT

Hi everybody

Yes, I know it’s wet. Roughy says that the course is the wettest he has seen it in his 9 years as green keeper. However the ducklings have begun to appear and the days are stretching out. Spring is near.

You will have seen the Pacific Homes digger and truck on the course over the passed month or so. Some drainage work has already been undertaken on the 8th., with lots of further work planned for the spring. Tony Workman has very generously loaned us this machinery. Thank you (again) Tony. This is in addition to the recent renewal of the Pacific Homes Major Sponsorship arrangement.

The 40th Anniversary Celebrations were a huge success both in terms of enjoyment for members and funds raised.

Friday’s midday haggle saw 42 players take to the course. Our Club Captain (Kiwi) Keith Webb and I were lucky enough to play with Caroline Bon (Northland No 1 Woman) and our own Alex (where’s my Stella) Tait. The evening event saw a further 25 dignitaries and supporters join in for the prize giving and celebration. Great to see 6 of our Life Members in attendance. Brian Dudin, Eric Denton, Bill Sexton, Angus Lyall, Mickey McDonald and Warren Allen.

2                          3

Mike Gavin, Caroline Bon, Keith Webb,                          Life Members Eric Denton, Brian Dudin,

Alex Tait on 1st Tee - Friday haggle.                                 Bill Sexton reflects on the club’s history.

Saturday saw the 60’s night. 94 tickets sold .What a laugh. Most dressed for the occasion. All joined in for the best and biggest night of fun I have seen at the clubhouse in years. Best dressed Female was Jeanene Oxinius. Best dressed male was Splinter. $400 travel prize (supported by Stephen Gillingham House of Travel) went to Angus Lyall.

Sunday’s Russian Roulette Tournament was again well patronized despite another deluge of rain drenching the course from the previous night. 44 hardy players took to the course, although revelers from the previous night were scarce. The winning team was Splinter and Sharon Cook.

Tuesday’s luncheon saw 85 men and women fill the clubhouse yet again to enjoy lunch, a drink and a chat put on by the ladies committee. This capped off 4 days of celebration to be remembered and completed the opportunity for all to participate. Well done ladies and thanks for inviting Vice President Blair Dempsey and I to join in.

I wish to thank all the sponsors who made donations for these events. This allowed for the whole of the celebrations to be a financial success and for the prizes and give-aways to be extremely generous.

Thank you to the organizing committee and the others who helped out especially those who are not part of our main committee. (Sorry, too many to name) Great work people. You’ve got to be happy with such a success.

Thanks also to all those who participated. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Michael Gavin, President

Anniversary Sponsors

A thank you to these businesses who gave additional sponsorship for our 40th Anniversary Celebrations.

The sponsors who made the weekend a success were;

Pak n Save, The Great New Zealand Wool Company, Parua Bay 4 Square, WHAT, Parua Bay Hair Salon, Onerahi Bookshop, Onerahi Pharmacy, Parua Bay Liquor, Skin Essentials, Parua Bay Workshop, Blueshore Gallery, Guthrie Bowron, Stephen Gillingham House of Travel.

Do you know why there are 18 holes on a golf course?

Because that's how long it took the Scots who invented the game to finish their bottle of whiskey!

LADIES PRESIDENT AND LADIES CLUB CAPTAIN

What a celebration we all had at our luncheon on Tuesday 22nd July.  The story swapping, laughter, mixing and mingling ensured a memorable occasion. A huge thanks to Shirley McCullough and Libby Long who organised, rang and maintained communication with past members and the club operators. Many, many thanks to Jeff Gould, Jenny Tito, Colin Cook, Dianne Lees and Peter Lister who organised the luncheon-the yummy food, and drinks, enabling past and present member’s time to enjoy one another's company. Thanks Leonie Cuff for the beautiful cake. Our plant auction made $300.00.

Many thanks to Lyn Pritchard, our auctioneer, and to those who brought and bought.

On Tuesday the 26th August, Joce Wards day, the 9 and 18 holers are playing 9 holes of golf, and then we have our auction. All good quality goods are welcome and so are you. Come at 11.00a.m. and join us for bargains and entertainment. Lyn has offered to be our auctioneer.

Golf is being played occasionally!!. Matches can be played when possible, don't stress, we'll get there.

Enjoy your holidays all those going away.

CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT

Well summer is now behind us and we have those horrible short days.

The course is suffering a little due to all the wet stuff. We seem to be getting

a week of reasonable weather and then the weekend arrives to heavy falls of

rain.

Can I just say a huge thanks especially to Peter LISTER and Tony VALIANT and all those other people who give their time so readily to help on the course. Those that have played recently will notice that a lot of our drains are becoming a lot cleaner. The junior section is also reaping the benefits as some 300 + golf balls have been found in numerous drains.

Onto recent events within the club: On Saturday 10th May the club held its Flog Day competition. This is where the course is played in reverse. 17 players took part and the winner for the men was Gary McEVOY , who scored a nett 62 off a 17 handicap. The winner for the ladies was Joy McDONALD who wishes her score to remain unknown.

Winners of the Cocks Cup, which is a pairs event for men playing alternate

shots and is over two rounds of nett was Toby Ralph and myself.

Our club pairs event, Top Dog has been won this year by Scott WILLIAMS

and John ANDERSON who defeated Mike NOONE and Mike BERTIE.

Congratulations to all those that took part in this years event.

Whilst on this subject of Top Dog, I can see no reason why this event should

not be played during the summer months. I am currently trying to include it

the fixture list to be played in February next year, and to complete before the Pines Pairs in early March.

As most of you are now aware, the internal out of bounds at the back of the

7th green, on both sides of 8th fairway, on the left of the 3rd fairway and the

left of the 14th fairway, have now been removed. These were put in place due to the danger of the trees that fell and then were removed. As this is no longer a danger to players those restrictions have been lifted.

Forthcoming / Ongoing competitions

The Captains and Vice Captains Trophies started on Sunday 13th July. This is the best 2 rounds from 3. In August the men’s Stroke Play starts as will the qualifying for Match Play.

On to information that some members may not be aware of.

Some of the clubs competitions state a maximum handicap for participants. This does not mean that you cannot play in that event if your handicap is higher than the maximum handicap shows. For example, if you play from a 26 handicap then you can enter our Top Dog event, even though it states max handicap 23.4. All it means is that the 23.4 handicap is what you will have to play to in that competition.

Well I am off now for 5 weeks. My mum, who is still in the UK , will be 80 on 08/08/08 and with my better half we are going to to surprise her.  So the ship will be left in the capable hands of Marcello, and whilst he is away for a couple of weeks, Te Hulk returns. Give em hell.!!!!!

Thank you

Course Convenor Report:

We are passed the halfway mark for the year.  Summer is just around the corner.  There is lots of course work to plan for.  Any suggestions are welcome.

Drainage is very difficult at the moment, but as you see we have water flowing down from the 8th fairway.  Thanks to Peter Lister and Tony Workman’s digger.  Also Brian Cuff and Roughy who put in some drain coil down the 12th fairway to a sump hole. This is the wettest year for a number of years, but we will eventually get the drainage sorted.

When at all possible we will let members who use carts do so, but PLEASE think and look where you are going, otherwise you damage the course.

Tony Taylor and Bob Langford (thank you guys) have planted trees on the hill below the 7th green.  If for any reason you need to go in there, please take care not to damage these trees.

At a recent course committee meeting, there was discussion on course conditions, future budgeting and long term planning.  There was also some serious discussion on bridge abutment on No 4 Fairway.

Jobs for Future Working Bees:

·         Hand rail or similar down the path from No 7 green.

·         Clearing of foliage from trees hanging in drain down No 10, and fence wire.

·         Irrigation pipe across culvert to Greens Shed.

·         Lower culverts on No 2 & No 3 Fairways, to enable better drainage from No 15 & 16 Fairways.

·         Investigate a possible fence on right hand side of the 7th tee to stop miss-hit balls breaking windows.

Junior Golf

There has not been much golf for juniors over the past month because of the weather and poor underfoot conditions. This is to be expected at this time of the year and we are reluctant to take sessions where the kids cannot really benefit or enjoy the experience. We have averaged about one training session per fortnight in June with good attendances of between ten and fourteen each time we have met and most recently this has included some new faces and potential new members. At the time of writing (26th) there has been no junior golf in July.

During this last school term we have also been taking a group of children from Parua Bay primary school as part of their winter electives programme. Unfortunately, in recent weeks we have also had to cancel many sessions because of the weather and ground conditions. I intend to arrange a meeting with the school Principal to discuss other options such as after-school classes in the spring and summer as a possible alternative.

Selwyn Aspin has expressed interest in helping with Junior Coaching and will be a very welcome addition to the team.

THE PINES GOLF CLUB

Official opening

PITCH-MARK                                           JUNE 2008

PRESIDENTS REPORT
Hi Everybody
It is hard to believe that we are now nearly half way thru 2008 with winter again upon us. Rules regarding ‘clean and place’ and the ‘suckered ball’ rule are now in play. However the course has recovered well after the torrential rain we received at the end of April. The secret, I’m told, is to stay on the fairway and you won’t loose balls or get damp feet.

Planting is to begin shortly on the land, now cleared of pines, at the back of the 7th green. My thanks go to Tony and Margaret Taylor, and others, who have put their hand up to organize this project. We should expect a few working bees before the end of winter.

After the unsuccessful purchase of a second hand rough mower we have had to bite the bullet and take on the added debt of a new piece of machinery.  On one hand this eliminates the cost of expensive maintenance. It should give many, many years of trouble free service and a better surface to play on.  However it was not a purchase we had budgeted for and again the strain goes on our very limited funds.

Jeff Gould and the crew from Mobile Beverage Service have indicated to the committee that they intend to continue with their contract, to manage the clubhouse, for further 3 years. After a difficult first year this shows great faith and commitment by Jeff in the potential he sees in our club. The financial benefits to the club are now becoming evident with improvements in most areas of income. Let’s all give our support to this arrangement. Jeff has now paid a players sub and has promised we will soon see him out on the course.

Official Opening of new Third Green
The official opening of the new 3rd Green on Sunday 4th May 2008 is another landmark in the history of The Pines Golf Club. In weather conditions, that can only be described as unfortunate, Maureen Workman chipped on and 2 putted to officially mark the occasion. Those who have now played the on it will agree that this is one of our best greens. Our thanks must go to the Lion Foundation for their initial funding; To Toby and Roughy for the extra effort; to the all volunteers who showed up at working bees; and of course to our major sponsor Pacific Homes. Without the personal and financial input from Tony Workman this project would not have been possible.

Finally thanks to John Anderson for taking on the job as editor of Pitchmark. Hopefully many of you will receive this edition by email. This gives cost savings to the club and is hopefully the start of better communication with our members. Printed copies will of course still be available from the clubhouse. Thank you, Blair Dempsey, for the great work done with Pitchmark up till now.

LADIES PRESIDENT AND LADIES CLUB CAPTAIN
Are you aware it’s our 40th Anniversary this year.  On Tuesday 22 July the women are organizing a get together luncheon for past and present members, men, women and friends.  This is for those who prefer to celebrate during the day.  Ring Libby Long 4362073 or the club 4362246 for details.

Thanks to Leonie Cuff who continues to manage our weekday pennants and to Marilyn Ralph who organizes weekend pennants.  Congratulation to Pines winners at Kaitaia, and the many winners at various venues around the North.  Lots of Pines names in the leading results.  Leonie has organized coaching with Adam Neal for women, at our club on Tuesdays after golf.

In the last few months the Women’s Committee has paid out nearly $6,000.00 towards club expenses.

Please read the minutes which hang on the wall to the left of the bar.  They may not be as interesting as some of the conversation doing the rounds, but they are “THE FACT”.

Good golfing, companionship, fresh air and exercise!!

CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT

Since my last report New Zealand has acquired two more citizens. On 11th April my wife, Jan, and I attended a civic ceremony at Forum North and were sworn in as citizens. I hope that England and New Zealand do not meet in to many sporting events.

A number of competitions have been completed over the past few weeks and listed below are the winners.
Pacific Motor Group Trophy - Aaron Wendt-Smith.
Kings Liquor Group Trophy -  Barrie Short.
Beath Putting -  Ian Billington.
Attwood Trophy - Trevor Mackenzie.
Presidents Trophy -  Ian Billington.
Vice Presidents Trophy - Ian Tibby.
Peterson Shield -  Phoebe and Tony Valiant.

The third green has now been completed and is ready for play. My thanks go to Maureen Workman who formally opened it on Sunday 4th May. Also to Tony Workman who generously assisted in the construction. Also to Toby our green keeper who has managed the project.

Can all players who qualified for Bulls on Bank and the Patrons trophy please arrange to play their outstanding matches.

Forthcoming competitions
Top Dog started on Sunday 18th May with the qualifying round.

The Pines 40 Year Celebration - 18, 19 & 20 July 2008
As this is the 40th year of The Pines I am trying to compile information on the Pines so an article can be placed in the local press. Anyone that can assist me I would be grateful for their help. I need as much info as possible, such as how the club was formed, by whom etc etc. Any old photos would also be of assistance. Also any little anecdotes that readers may find amusing.

You can either phone me at home on 436 2834 or e mail me at keijan451@slingshot.co.nz

Thank you.
Keith Webb

(The rumour that Toby Ralph (Bin Laden) tried to cash in his haggle winning voucher at the TAB is not true.)

(Comment made by Toby Ralph at the end of Cocks Cup Competition was that Keith Webb is the best “rough” player he has ever played with.)

Junior Golf
The Saturday afternoon coaching programme continues to be well supported by a regular group of very keen golfers as well as by new members, including, for the first time, two enthusiastic girls.

The report on the  very successful Junior Girls ‘fun day’  held earlier this month can be seen on our website on the ‘Recent Events’ page, together with photos of those who took part.

Planning of the Junior pennants programme is underway and this is scheduled to begin in July and go through to October .  The dates for the Pennants competitions are 20 July, 10 August, 14 September, and 19 October and all competitions will be held on a Sunday. We will let you know the venues and start times when the programme has been finalised. We are planning to have at least one, and hopefully two teams, taking part.

The club now has fifty paid up Junior members which is a very good base to build on.

Parents who would like to see their children increase their skill level and enjoyment of the game by joining the Saturday coaching programme can contact the Junior Convenor, Dave Mundell, on 4340112  or by just turning up at the course on a Saturday at 1pm.

THE BATHTUB TEST
During a visit to the mental hospital, a visitor asked the Director how do they determine whether or not a patient should be institutionalized.
“Well” said the Director, “As a test we fill up a bathtub, then we offer the patient a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket and ask him or her to empty the bathtub”.
“Oh, I understand” said the visitor.  “A normal person would use the bucket because it is bigger than the spoon or the teacup”.
“No” said the Director, “A normal person would pull the plug”.

“Would you prefer a bed near a window?”

(I personally DO NOT believe the rumour that this test was used to select the local Fire Arms Officer)

From the “Oval” office
April already. The leaves are beginning to fall, and jerseys and sweatshirts are starting to show. Let’s hope for a mild and dry winter at The Pines
The Pines Pairs has been and gone for 2008 and I must say it has been a most satisfying to see Keith Webb and his team put on an excellent event. Thanks to the green’s staff and all the volunteers for the extra effort. Thanks to the Clubhouse staff for all the good work.
There have been some major changes on the course since the last newsletter. The most obvious being the removal of the damaged radiata plantations. The Committee now seeks input from members as to how these areas are redeveloped. The area to be addressed first will probably be the hill behind the seventh green as this will cost the least. I have already received dozens of verbal good ideas. I now ask if anyone can come up with a written proposal supported by plans and costings . We have been gifted 400 native trees by the Papakarahi Land Care Group in Nook Rd to get us started. Thank you, thank you.
I would like to clarify the unwritten rules regarding the rewarding of any player who achieves a Hole in One. Different clubs have different ideas and customs; insurance, who shouts? how much? etc. My understanding is that The Pines committee in its wisdom changed our rules some years ago. Any obligation to shout does not fall on the successful golfer. However his /her friends, playing partners, and others within the club may wish to shout a drink (alcoholic or non alcoholic). To avoid drunken behaviour and injury (by some) the rules have been further refined to take pressure off the recipient .Further the club should arrange to have the ball mounted.
Good golfing……. Mike G
‘Ladies President & Ladies Captain’
All competitions and pennants are well in hand. Most ladies are finding the “rough” a challenge after our wet summer, but are still very keen with some good scores being posted. The “Ellen Moyle” h/cap match play is in progress.
Thanks to Ella and Elva for helping with the working bee on the course and to all the ladies for the spring cleaning in the clubhouse. We sincerely thank these women; Patricia Jojnson, Carrol Jessop,Libby Long,Jenny Tito, Eileen Sloper, Carol Lindsay, Leone Cuff, Corrie Mc Kewon, Matchiko Smith, and Akiko Weinjdorp who cleaned the windows, dusted and washed curtains inside the clubhouse. The next day Ella Crane and Elva Kerr were part of the tidy up team who helped clear the 8th fairway of pine branches etc.. A huge thanks to all these women. The club is also very appreciative to the Women's Committee for their substantial financial help
Lots of activity on the course for ladies this month..

Cub Captain's Report’
A lot has happened since the last meeting.
The winners are as follows,
Parua Bay Tavern Trophy won by Mahu Harris and Mike Bertie.
Pache Trophy won by Les Scott and Elva Kerr and Toby Ralph and Betty Scott.
Cats and Dogs  won by Peter Johnston and Ella Crane.
Pacific Motor Group Trophy won by Aaron WENDT-SMITH
Kings Liquor Group Trophy won by Barrie SHORT
Beath Putting  won by Ian BILLINGTON
Patrons Trophy has had it’s qualifying round and progress sheet is on notice board.
Bulls on Bank has also had it’s qualifying round and again progress is being made
The Pines Pairs has just been completed. This is a huge tournament for our club. The field was complete with 64 pairs participating in the event which were divided into 4 Divisions.
The 1st Division boasted 13 pairs with combined handicaps of 10 or under
A large number of Pines players gave up there time to make sure that the competition kept up its tradition. We had a car park attendant, starters, scorers, spotters and a lot of people that turned up to offer their help. I am very greatful  to them.
Forthcoming competitions include the Attwood Trophy and Presidents and Vice Presidents Trophies.
Junior Golf
The Saturday afternoon coaching program for the year got off to a promising start to be set back a little by a succession of wet Saturdays as well as the Easter break. Those attending the sessions say that they are enjoying what they are doing and are making good progress with their game.
Our new apprentice greenkeeper, Jacob Brown is also part of the junior squad and both he and his younger brother Luke are showing real promise, to the point where we have arranged additional professional coaching for them during the next few weeks.

As the cricket season draws to a close we would love to see the more ‘senior’ juniors back with us and to have them join with other members and play in the Sunday programme.
The Pines will be hosting a Junior Girls training morning on Friday 4th of April under the direction of Ann Hood, Golf Development Manager for Northland. To date there are 44 entries which is very pleasing to see and a number of women club members as well as coaches have kindly offered to help by accompanying the girls around the six holes to be played. We think it is important  for the Club to support such initiatives as all clubs badly need keen juniors and keen girls in particular.
Most of the listed Juniors have paid their subs for the year. This is just a gentle reminder to the remaining ones to quickly follow suit, as unpaid ‘members’ are due to be removed from the dot golf system very soon.
We welcome any new junior players to join us on a Saturday afternoon at 1pm. Clubs and practice balls are all provided. All you need to be is keen to try something new and over the age of ten.

Dave Mundell. Junior Convenor.

Seven months into our financial year and the new committee is full of enthusiasm and good ideas. Unfortunately most projects cost money so some can only progress as funds allow.

Keith Webb is proving to be an inspiration as new Club Captain. He along with his team, Match and Tournaments do a huge amount of work behind the scenes for our benefit. Pat Martin is leading the charge in sourcing new sponsors for this year.

By the time this goes to press the removal of the pine plantations (between the 3rd and 8th fairways and behind the 7th green) should be finished. This project has been talked about for many years and is finally behind us.

The new 3rd green is now complete. All that is required now is time for the land to settle and the grass to grow. Our thanks must go to Tony and Maureen Workman and Pacific Homes Ltd for their generosity. Without their huge financial input this project would not have been possible. Thanks also to those who joined the working bee in late December to lay the grass / turf on the surrounds.

The course is in great condition at present - Good work Toby and Roughy and those who have volunteered time and labour over the past few months, especially Tony Valiant, Barry Jessop and Les Scott.

Good golfing…..Mike G

Junior Golf

Junior coaching begins on Saturday 16th February and runs promptly from 1pm to approximately 3pm. If you are in doubt about the weather on the day, ring the Clubhouse between 10 – 10:30am. We look forward to another good year and a further high level of participation and encourage parents to bring their juniors along to the training sessions.

Absolute beginners are particularly welcome. Clubs, golf bags, trundlers and balls are all provided.  The only criterion for inclusion is that you need to be at least 10 years of age.

Junior players who already have a handicap are also very welcome to return to the group. This year we will endeavour to provide you with separate coaching when the occasion demands.

We intend to make use of a professional coach for all juniors, following the very successful coaching session run by Chris McLaren in 2007.

A slot to be set aside in the Sunday morning programme for groups of junior handicap players to play a round, most likely after the senior players at around 9:30.

Many of you will have noticed a number of very keen juniors practicing and playing on the course in the weekends and after school. Please encourage them to join you and to make them feel welcome as club members if you are not personally involved in playing a match.

We look forward to beginning the year on a positive note.

 From The Course

Well Brendon has moved on to Titirangi Golf Club. Gave him a send off one Friday afternoon with a BBQ & 9 Holes of golf.

Thanks to those of you who are putting in so much time helping with mowing etc. Toby & Roughy’s efforts are really appreciated, also Lyn Pritchard who has lent us her Rotary Slasher.  John - would like to think he is still helping after his passing on, sadly missed.

A real good turnout from everybody on Tuesday the 18th December 2007 for our working bee, we got the No 3 Green Surrounds all turfed with grass from Practice Fairway, had a good clean out of a couple of drains, a Big Day thanks to everybody.

A big welcome to Jacob the new apprentice - Introduce yourselves when you see him and make him feel one of the team.

Jeff’s Jabber…..from the Bar Management Team

We implore all our Members to take a card from the Dot golf system to enable our people to identify those people legitimately on the course. If visitors or guests are along, please tell us at the clubhouse to avoid uncertainties as to who should or should not be playing.

Meals and kitchen services -

For the next few months we will have the kitchen operating Sundays, Tuesdays, and Fridays (and by arrangement on Saturdays). A range of sandwiches cakes pies etc will be available every day with a variety of hot meals and snacks on kitchen operating days.
